Landscape photography looks simple enough. After all, a mountain does not move. Neither does a lone tree in a meadow. Landscape photography is one of the most difficult forms of photography when it comes to making a striking image instead of just another vacation snapshot. There are things, however, that you can do to make a magnificent landscape photograph.

Points of Interest

Just having a pretty view is not enough to make a good landscape photograph. You must have a focal point, something on which your eye can rest. That interest point could be something as simple as a few wildflowers, an unusually shaped cloud, a palm tree or even a fence.

There should be something in the foreground of the picture. That gives your picture depth and can lead the eye to the rest of the picture.

Do not put the focal point in the center of the picture, however. The rule of thirds divides up the frame into three sections up and down and three sections left to right. The four points were the horizontal and vertical lines intersect are especially powerful, according to Picture Correct's "The Essentials of a Good Landscape Photo."

Right Light

A key to a magnificent landscape photograph is light. The best light for photography is about an hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. Photographers call this the "Golden Hour" because the light is warm and soft.

Mid-day light is harsh and not as appealing. It will produce a photograph that looks flat.

In dim light, a flash is not effective if the subject is more than about 4 yards away. Instead, available light should be used. That requires a slow shutter speed. A slow shutter speed requires a tripod because most photographers cannot hold their cameras steady enough to get sharp focus for more than about 1/30th of a second.

Emotion

The key to getting a good landscape photograph is capturing the emotion that attracted you to a scene in the first place. Once you know what emotion the scene evokes, you can use your knowledge of shutter speeds and f-stops to replicate that in the camera.

For instance, if a waterfall makes you think of power, you may shoot it with a faster shutter speed to try to replicate the force in which the water falls over the rocks. If, however, a river makes you feel relaxed and serene, a longer shutter speed that makes the water appear silky would reflect that emotion better.
