How to Pose for High-Fashion Photography

High-fashion photography is a fast-paced and pressure-filled world. It all comes down to looking the part and being trendy. It also requires thick skin and a positive attitude. Most models will have only a few pictures from an entire shoot that are truly stunning, so it requires practice and an ability to objectively observe oneself without being either too critical or too soft.

Instructions

    1

Begin by getting in the right mindset. A model's job is to accentuate the clothes while catching the eye of the viewer. A model should not critique a designer's clothes if she doesn't like them or if they don't fit her style. Bringing a positive attitude to the table will show up in the pictures. Even when the model doesn't feel well, she should strive to not become a diva.

    2

Study yoga, pilates or dance to understand how your body moves. These poses will almost never be used in shoots, but the objective is to become an expert at moving your body. These activities will also help you stay in shape, which is important for any model.

    3

Study the basics of photographic composition. While the model doesn't need to be an expert by any means, understanding concepts like leading lines, which are lines that draw attention to specific parts of the frame, will help you sell the products that the you're wearing. Remember that the poses shouldn't draw attention away from the clothes but rather should accentuate them.

    4

Find the rhythm of the photographer. Understand how frequently the photographer you are working with shoots a frame and make sure to be posed in that second rather than being in between moments when a photo is taken. This will help to better analyze what poses work and which look too constructed. It also helps to ensure that the good photos aren't simply accidents, but are something that can be recreated.

    5

Make interesting shapes and lines with the body. This takes a lot of practice, but make sure to incorporate as many different poses as possible. Listen to the photographer, and if she is liking certain poses, strive to pose along those lines.
