Light is required for the eye to be able to see colors, shapes and objects. Artists and photographers use light not only to illuminate their subjects but to create shadows, add drama, enhance color and give their work depth and dimension. Lighting is one of the most important tools in a photographer's arsenal.
Highlight and Shadow
Highlights and shadows are the light and dark areas light creates on an object or subject. Too much light and the object will look too bright, blown out. Too little light; and the shadows take over, making the object hard to see. It is important to keep lighting properly balanced, casting the right amount of shadow and highlight on the subject.
Color
Color can be viewed only with light. Different light spectrums will affect the color of the object. Types of lighting commonly used in photography are natural, tungsten (light bulbs) and florescent. Each type of light will change the appearance of color.
Contrast
Contrast is created by using dark shadows and bright highlights. An object illuminated under a high-contrast lighting scheme can look harsher, more sinister. High contrast lighting is often used in black-and-white photography where highlight and shadow is used instead of color to define the object.
Depth and Dimension
Light can be used to create depth and dimension by making an object appear closer or farther away, it can also make a subject appear larger or smaller. An object cast in shadow can look smaller and farther away, while an object that is in bright light will look larger and closer. Light can also create and emphasize the texture of an object.
Filtered and Diffused Light
Different lenses and filters can change the way light is perceived by the eye. Light can be filtered to isolate a specific spectrum, such as infrared. Objects shot using an infrared filter will be viewed only within the infrared spectrum. Diffused lighting makes light hit the subject at many angles instead of a single angle. Diffused light can make a subject appear brighter, lessening shadows.
Drama
Lighting is an important element in movies and photography because of its ability to create drama. Objects that are cast in shadows can appear quiet and somber, add some color and the shadows can appear more sinister or sad. Objects that are brightly lit can seem brighter and cheerier. Soft, diffused, light can make people look younger and a make a scene feel dreamlike.
