Split toning is a technique that dates from the days of black-and-white film photography. After printing an image, the photographer soaks the freshly made print in two toner baths. These baths are made of mineral dyes that give the image a specific color. When the photographer utilizes two toning baths, one toner dyes the shadows while another dyes the highlights, producing a "split-toned" effect. Any combination of colors can be used, but combinations of cold and warm colors are most commonly used, write photographers and educators Katrin Eismann and Sean Duggan..
Selenium
Selenium is one of the most commonly used toners in black-and-white film photography because of its archival properties. While prints that are not treated with selenium may fade or discolor over time, those treated with the mineral resist such distortions. Because of these properties, selenium is often used in the split-toning process. While a highly diluted selenium solution will impart very little color to a black-and-white image, a less-diluted solution will give the print a violet or plum hue. This color, and the color of all toners, varies depending on the dilution of the toning solution, the chemistry of your specific paper and the way the print was printed and treated before it was toned.
Sepia
Sepia toning is one of the best known toning processes, producing a popular "old-timey" effect. Sepia toning dyes the image a chestnut brown common to older photographs, while also preserving the print to a certain extent. When paired with another toner, especially selenium, sepia toning can create velvety deep black with brilliant highlights as it relies on a bleaching bath before the image is redeveloped in the sepia toner.
Gold
Unlike the previous two examples, gold toner has little archival purpose and is extremely expensive. However, gold toner imparts a gorgeous warmth to black-and-white photographs that many photographers find highly desirable and even addictive. While gold toner can be used on its own to produce excellent results, it shines when paired with a darker-colored toner, such as selenium or copper, which gives deep red-brown shadows and ethereal, bluish highlights.
Copper
Like gold, copper is a popular toner renowned for its warmth in the shadow range of photographs. Because copper toner requires the photograph to be bleached before it can be dyed, it affects the highlights just as much as it affects the shadows when used exclusively. When paired with other colors, however, copper acts much like gold, shifting the shadows from inky black to velvety dark brown and allowing the second toner to color the highlights.
