How do I Clean a Daguerreotype?

The daguerreotype is one of the earliest photographic processes, invented by Frenchman Louis Daguerre in 1839. The daguerreotype is made up a silvered copper plate, which is housed in a protective casing. Cleaning a daguerreotype incorrectly can cause serious damage. With care you can clean your daguerreotype while protecting it from damage. If you are not confident cleaning the daguerreotype yourself you should consult a professional who will have the skill and equipment to clean it properly.

Dry Clean

Separate the different parts of the daguerreotype before you begin cleaning. Carefully remove the preserver and the glass front from the plate. Blow compressed air over the plate to remove dust and debris. Carefully wipe the glass and reassemble.

Water Clean

Wash with water if the daguerreotype remains dirty. Submerge the camera in a bath of warm, deionized water. This can be found in specialist stores or online. Clean the daguerreotype using a series of solvent baths or a 95 percent alcohol solution. Empty the camera cleaning fluid, such as Zeiss, Hama or Eclipse's cleaning solutions into a bowl. Bathe the camera lens glass and the camera plate in this solution by gently wiping them with a soft cloth. Once it has been bathed in the solution place it over a low, controlled heat until it is completely dry.

Electro-Washing

Prepare the daguerreotype for electro-washing if it requires further cleaning by washing it in a solution of diluted ammonium hydroxide. Submerge the daguerreotype in a solution of ammonium hydroxide and deionized water. Place the silver bar above the camera, being careful that it does not make contact with the daguerreotype. Carefully pass a weak electric current through the silver bar so that any corrosive particles will be transferred from the daguerreotype to the silver plate.

Reassembly

Reassemble the daguerreotype by connecting the preserver and glass front to the plate.
