How to Use an Old 4X5 Camera

The 4-by-5 camera was once the mainstay of professional photographers. However, fine art photographers still use them today. The large 4-by-5 inch negative produces fine detail and provides a range of tones unsurpassed by even the best digital cameras. Unlike today's complicated cameras that make photography simple, a 4-by-5 or larger format camera is a simple machine that is somewhat complicated to use.

Instructions

    1

Load the film holder. In complete darkness, pull the darkslide out of the film holder, and flip open the end opposite the darkslide. Slide the film into the holder with the notches at the upper right corner. Flip the end closed, and reinsert the darkslide. Most film holders have two sides; flip the film holder over and load film in the other side, as well.

    2

Open the shutter. Most large format lenses have a "press to focus" button; depress this button to open the shutter. If the shutter lacks a press to focus button, set the shutter to "T" and fire the shutter; the shutter will stay open until the shutter release is tripped.

    3

Compose and focus using the ground glass back. Place the dark cloth over your head and over the back of the camera. Look at the ground glass on the back of the camera, the image will be upside down. Focus using the focus knob. Some cameras have more than one focus knob; it doesn't matter which one you use. When the image is in focus, close the shutter.

    4

Insert the film holder into the camera by sliding it under the ground glass on the back of the camera. The ground glass is attached with springs that allow it to move back slightly from the camera body. When the film holder is fully inserted, it will "click" into place. Fully remove the darkslide from the film holder on the side closest to the lens.

    5

Set your chosen aperture and shutter speed on the shutter at the front of the camera. Cock the shutter, then press the shutter release to make the exposure.

    6

Replace the darkslide in the film holder before removing the film holder from the camera.
