How to Make an Easy Photo Flip Book

In a world of complex technology, it is easy to forget there are simple yet effective ways to create wonder. Flip books are one of these ways. Without using a camcorder or requiring any electrical device for playback, people can capture a moment with a series of still photographs, and combine these into a flip book that recreates the moment for years to come. Flip books make an interesting educational project, but also are a valuable addition to a coffee table or any place they can be casually shared.

Instructions

    1

Take photos of an action or event in a consecutive series, capturing an image of each movement that occurs. Use a camera with a quick shutter speed and avoid using a digital camera that requires an adjustment period between each photo if the event happens quickly. Any event that has observable action can work for a photo flip book. You can create it of an event over time, such as a growing, pregnant belly, or the first year of a child's life. Just take a new picture each day from the same angle, with the same background. You can also capture a moment such as a wedding kiss or a child doing jumping jacks.

    2

Print your photos out or have your photos professionally printed by a photo-processing location. Photos need to be the same size and stacked in a pile. Consideration should be given to the size of the stack as the smaller the pile, the easier it will be to flip. Narrow down photos by reviewing each and removing any that do not resemble any sequential movement. For example, if a photo appears to be an exact duplicate, it can be removed to reduce the size of the book.

    3

Add a cover and/or back to the photo flip book if desired. A cover is helpful because it protects the top photo, and can provide detail about the contents, such as a title or date of the photos. A cover can be made from card stock, thin cardboard or even construction paper. Cut the cover and back so they are the same size as the photos; use a ruler, pencil and scissors to make them the correct measurements.

    4

Bind the photos and covers together to make a book that can be flipped. How you bind these is completely up to you. A binder clip or banker clip is a quick and easy way to fasten the book together. It will look effortless, classic and serve its purpose. You can also staple the flip book on one edge or have it professionally bound.
