Most photographers tend to be attracted to certain kinds of photography. Some people enjoy photographing places and their people while others may want to get out of town and shoot nature. Yet others are interested in shooting people or perhaps models. There are many different themes in the world of photography.
Geographical Photography
One theme that many photographers use is a geographical theme that focuses on capturing the essence of a city or town. To do this, a photographer must shoot in many different locations in that place at different times of the day. A photographer interested in capturing the essence of Washington, D.C., for example, would attempt to photograph the Washington Monument, the Capitol Building, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and perhaps the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. That photographer would take these shots at sunrise, during the day, at sunset and after dark, perhaps attempting to shoot some of the memorials from a boat on the Potomac River.
Landscape/Nature Photography
Landscape or nature photography is similar to geographical photography in that a city skyline or street can be considered a landscape. However, instead of focusing on buildings and institutions in that city, the photographer would be more interested in wide-range panoramic shots of the city. Landscape photography is also done outside of urban settings. A photographer interested in capturing the essence of the Israeli desert, for example, would take shots of specific locales such as Masada or the Dead Sea. She might also attempt to photograph one of the many small sandstorms that occur on windy days or of the Rift Valley as the mountains begin to close in on the Red Sea approaching Eilat. She could take close-ups of the many small desert plants and flowers growing out of the sand.
Human Portrait Photography
Portrait photography is another theme that often occurs in the world of photography exhibits. A portrait photographer is not simply interested in taking simple shots of the human face. A portrait photographer will seek out subjects in significant places such as war zones or refugee camps and try to capture significant moments when these people are at their most expressive. The goal is to evoke emotions of these same small moments in the viewer. An amateur portrait photographer can use friends or family as subjects and ask them to recall important moments and express those sentiments in the face. The viewer might then be asked to view a photo and attempt to interpret what that expression communicates.

Photojournalists have a whole different job. Whereas a human portrait photographers job is to evoke a sentiment in the subject or in the viewer, a photojournalists job is to visually document an event. Photojournalism does not have to be fancy; it can be done at a political rally or fundraiser in your town. CNNs iReport exists for amateur photojournalists to post their photographs of significant events.
