How to Make Pictures Into a Painting

Pictures not only capture moments, but memories. When people look at a picture they feel the emotions they felt in the moment, the details of the place, the events before and after the photo was taken. Turning a photo into a painting is a more artistic approach. This can be done by submitting a picture to experienced artists or doing it yourself. Though the process is involved, amateurs are more than capable of using their artistic talent to finish a polished product.

Instructions

    1

Select and edit your picture. Choose a picture with bright color and lighting. Upload the picture into a photo program, such as Photoshop, or the basic software that comes on your computer. Crop and edit the picture to eliminate flaws that could distract during the drawing and painting process.

    2

Print and graph the picture. Once you are satisfied with the way your picture looks, print an 8-by-11 inch copy on regular computer paper. With a ruler and pencil, create a grid with inch by inch boxes. This will help you identify small areas to draw as you move to the larger image. Choose a canvas or paper appropriate for painting.

    3

Sketch. After creating a grid, sketch your picture box by box onto your canvas. Sketch lightly in case you need to erase. When each box is sketched, erase your grid lines and examine the overall product. Fix problem areas. While a grid may be an amateur method for those trained in art, it is helpful for beginners so they are not overwhelmed by the enormity of their project. It also allows them to focus on the details in each section so nothing is overlooked or forgotten in the overall portrait.

    4

Paint. Acrylic or oil paints are popular mediums. When you are satisfied with your sketch, choose the colors needed to complete your portrait. It may be easier to start with the background and then work your way to the subject of the picture. Consult a color wheel for blending of colors. Mix white or black to create varying shades. Different brushes may be needed, as well. When you are finished, focus on any areas needing extra attention. It may be necessary to paint in layers in order to achieve a realistic portrait.
