There is no general how-to in photography; all shoots vary completely depending on the models, the photographer, the location and the models. There are a few general tips to follow when photographing a couple together as well as a classic shot list to remember during the shoot. However, the best way to photograph a couple is to put your own style as a photographer into it and to take as many varied and creative shots as possible.

Get to know the couple's interests in order to pick an appropriate location. Depending on the type of shoot, whether an engagement, prom, family or everyday occasion, the location you decide on will vary. However, for most couple shoots it is advantageous to choose a location that is most appropriate for the couple's interests. Find out if they are beach bums, run in the park every day, love the city, go for walks around the river or first met at a carnival or where the proposal took place, if an engagement shoot. Planning the location based on the couple's interests makes for a more personal outcome.
2Discuss wardrobe with the couple before the shoot. Wardrobe generally can be up to the model to decide in a personal shoot; however, as there are two models in a couple shoot, they need to match. Whether the couple sticks to monotone jeans and T-shirts or bright colors and patterns does not matter as long as their outfits don't clash when they are side by side. Suggest that they chose complementing colors, and if one goes with a pattern, have the other stick to a solid.
3Take the classic shots specific to the event. If the shoot is for an engagement, there are specific shots that should be taken along with alternative poses that you, as the photographer, wish to set up. Engagement shoots should include a mock proposal, the couple hugging front to front, the couple hugging with the man behind the woman, holding hands while walking toward the camera, holding hands while walking away from the camera and a seated position. Wedding shots of a couple should include all of the shots listed for engagement (minus the mock proposal) as well as close ups of their hands together with their rings, caught in a slow dance and the bride and groom kissing each other. If the shoot is a maternity shoot, capture the husband with his hands on the belly, with his head resting on the belly and hugging the mother from behind.
4Instruct the couple on exactly what to do. As the photographer, your models are your pawns. You must tell them exactly what to do. Models expect the photographer to take charge, so don't feel shy or pushy and be firm. You are the only one who knows how something will look in the final result. Tell the models to smile more or less, move the position of their hands, tilt their heads, laugh or act natural. It is your responsibility to make them look the way your shot requires them to look.
5Shoot both candid and posed photos. The majority of candid shots are posed shots meant to look like candid shots with the models looking away from the camera. Take a few head-on shots with the couple looking at the camera, but the majority should be of the couple interacting naturally without looking at the camera. As well as the posed candid shots, try to get a few actual candid shots, that is, when the models do not know that they are being photographed. This can be done during a location change or any other interruption.
6Incorporate your style and creativity. People hire photographers based on their photographic style, so make sure to put your own stamp into the shoot with lighting, creative poses, angles, colors, props and composition.
