How to Use a Photo Enlarger

Traditional darkroom procedures for developing film and photographic prints have changed little over the years, with the exception of commercial processes. In an age where digital photography has virtually eliminated the need for a darkroom, knowledge of traditional practices is essential for any serious photographer. This is a basic guide designed to furnish the beginner with simple steps in the use of an enlarger; see the Resources section at the end of this article for information on related processes.

    Set up your work area. If you do not have access to a darkroom, set up a makeshift darkroom in a bathroom, closet or other area where sunlight and light from others rooms is completely blacked out. A photo enlarger uses a safelight (a red or amber light that does not activate the photo-sensitive materials in the photographic paper) and is the only light that should be used when the paper is exposed. Color photographs must be printed in total darkness.

    Mix the developing chemicals according to directions. There will be four trays---developer, stop bath, fixer, and water to rinse the chemicals from the paper. Pour the chemicals into the trays and have the photographic paper ready. Photo paper should be kept enclosed in its packaging until just prior to use, as exposure to light will activate the paper and render it useless.

    Make sure the lens is properly placed in the head of the enlarger. Set the lens aperture to f8 by adjusting the ring. Turn the enlarger light on and raise or lower the head of the enlarger using the knob or lever located on the right of the column. Adjust the focus knob as needed to sharpen the edges of the light projected onto the enlarger base. If you are using 8-by-10-inch photographic paper, focus the light rectangle so that its edges are sharp and fall within the desired parameters on the enlargement easel.

    Once you have chosen the negative you want to develop, place it in the negative carrier so that the shiny emulsion side faces up and the image is centered within the carrier frame. Place a piece of printer paper or other plain white paper in the easel and make further adjustments to focus the image as needed with the focusing knob.

    Turn off the enlarger light. Set the timer and aperture; these settings can be determined using the test strip (see Resources section at the end of this article for information on how to create one). Insert the filter, if you are using one, into its place in the enlarger head and close the metal flap to prevent light leaks.     Place a piece of photographic paper in the easel with the shiny emulsion side up. Switch the timer on to expose the paper, then transfer it to your developing station to process in the chemicals (see Resources for information on chemical processing).

How to Take Quality Self-Portraits

Self-portrait photos are part of your online image. We all want self-portraits to look appealing yet spontaneous. But simply holding the camera, framing the shot and focusing are more problematic when we turn the camera on ourselves. Many people just keep shooting until they happen to take an acceptable picture, but a number of techniques leave less to chance in the quest for quality self-portraits.

    Set the stage for your self-portrait. Look behind you to make sure there is no mess, clutter or unsightly distractions. On the other hand you don't need a formal drop-sheet background. Make objects in the background blurry and less intrusive by shooting with a shallow depth of field.

    Shoot in good lighting. A professional photographer carries a specialized lighting kit, but this is unnecessary for informal self-portraits. Find a spot were the main light source is in front of you and above or to one side. Soft, diffused light is considered most flattering. This can come from a north-facing window or a large skylight in a museum, mall or university building, or shoot outside on a cloudy day. Bright sunlight may provide interesting effects, but it also creates harsh shadows. Avoid shooting when the main light source is behind you.

    Use a tripod and your camera's self-timer mode to help position yourself properly in the frame. Place a stuffed animal or other object where you will sit, focus and frame your shot, then swap places with the object as the timer is counting down. Set the camera on a table or other stable surface if you don't have a tripod.

    Hold the camera with your arm outstretched for on-the-fly pictures. Turn the camera upside down and press the button with your thumb. This is often less awkward than trying to hold it right side up. Place a mirror behind the camera so that you can see the reflection of the video monitor.

    Take a photo of your reflection in a mirror. Turn off the flash and remember that any writing on your shirt will be reversed. Use a photo-editing program to flip the picture horizontally to remedy this situation.

    Play with the angle of the camera and the direction of your gaze to create interesting and unusual compositions. Raise the camera above your head and angle it down at about 45 degrees, or place it on the floor angled up at you. Emphasize parts of your body other than your face, or using your self-timer, place yourself to one side of the frame rather than in the center. Look at an object in the picture or focus on something off-screen to break from the norm of looking directly into the camera. Choose from these techniques to create high-quality, traditional self-portraits or more artistic images to capture your viewer's attention.

A portrait's scene can be integral to the quality of the photograph. A good scene can tie the background to the subject. Photography scenes can be set up in the studio or outdoors. They can be fun to create and easy to assemble. You can personalize your scene by using items you have around your house as props.

Look for visually appealing places, such as flower gardens and parks. Consider using places that are asymmetric to add character to your background. Use props that fit a common theme so that the photograph is balanced. If you are doing portrait photography, ask your subject to bring in items that are important to him.

How to Change to Black, White & Sepia Program Watermarks

Watermarks are marks that are added to artwork and photographs on the Internet so that people cannot steal other people's work. You are able to write your name or the name of your photography business in the watermark, and save the photograph. Black and white, and sepia are all color themes or color concepts that can be implemented into the font of your watermark that you created in a photograph-alteration program such as Photoshop.

    Upload the photograph into your photograph-alteration program.

    Click on "Tools" or "Insert" on the menu bar located at the top of the page. Look for "Watermark" and click on it. If your program does not have a watermark option, look to the left-hand side of your page and click on the text-box icon.

    Place the watermark or text-box icon in the middle of your photograph. Type in your name or the name of your business. Click on the photo outside of the box.

    Highlight the text and change the font color to a white, black, gray, or sienna brown color. This is how you get that black, white, or sepia color concept.

    Keep the text highlighted as you go up to the menu bar and click on "Layer." Highlight the option "Layer Style Blending." Choose "Blending Options" and find the Opacity bars. Slide the bar to the left and watch the text blend into the photograph. Stop when you think it is an appropriate shade for the watermark.

    Place the watermark or text-box icon in the middle of your photograph. Type in your name or the name of your business. Click on the photo outside of the box.

    Highlight the text and change the font color to a white, black, gray, or sienna brown color. This is how you get that black, white, or sepia color concept.

    Keep the text highlighted as you go up to the menu bar and click on "Layer." Highlight the option "Layer Style Blending." Choose "Blending Options" and find the Opacity bars. Slide the bar to the left and watch the text blend into the photograph. Stop when you think it is an appropriate shade for the watermark.
