No matter how precise the camera, film stock or digital sensor, a photo will always reflect the subjective eye of the photographer. There are a variety of techniques a photographer can use to make to make a product more appealing. When taking photos for retail purposes, you can use some of these techniques to produce high-quality images of everything from jewelry and accessories to toys and packaged products.
Instructions
Preparation
- 1
Attach a digital camera to a tripod.
2Set the tripod with the camera attached in front of the center of your work surface.
3Tape up a sheet of white seamless photography paper as your backdrop using masking tape.
4Arrange the paper so that it curves down to the work surface in front of your camera. This will create a sense of unlimited space in the background.
5Tape the front edge of the paper to the work surface with masking tape. Ensure that you have enough paper on the surface to place your product.
6Place the product on the flat portion of the paper on the work surface.
7Prepare a base for the product. Smaller products can benefit from a base made from a small circular piece covered in a neutral color fabric. Other products may not require any kind of base. Use your personal judgment based on the size and nature of the product.
8Arrange the product so that it faces the camera at a slight angle. This will help illustrate the shape and dimensions of the object.
9Set two photographic lights pointing at the object at a downward angle at approximately 45 degrees to either side of the camera. Ensure that the product is fully and evenly lit by the lights.
10Attach diffusion material to the front of the photographic lights with clips. This will soften the shadows the lights cast on the product.
11Take a photo using the camera's automatic setting. If the camera's flash comes on automatically, turn off the flash function or increase the amount of lights on the product to prevent the flash from coming on.
12Experiment with different product and lighting angles, number of lights and distance from the product until you have a variety of photos to choose from.
