How to Tie a Sling for Newborn Photography

Baby slings are a creative way to capture newborns in photography. Sleeping infants can look peaceful in slings, and parents often like the way the images look. Tying a knot in a baby sling is a simple process. However, you always take precautions to assure the baby's safety. Use a stick marketed for use with baby slings so that you know it will support the baby's weight. Also, always hold the sling and baby just above a bean bag for added safety.

Instructions

Loop-Style Sling

Lay the loop sling flat on the floor so that it resembles an O. Lay the baby sling bar over the top of the sling, about 6 inches from the top.

Fold the the top of the sling over the top of the bar. Pull the bottom section of the loop toward you while guiding it through the back of the top section of loop you just folded over the bar.

Pull the knot snugly so there isn't much give. Turn the bar and loop around to see the front of the knot. You can pull the edges of the knot to spread it out if desired, but do not undo the woven loop.

Tie-Top Sling

Only use a sling when the infant is sleeping.

Lay the sling flat on the floor and shape it to resemble a narrow U. Lay the baby sling bar on top of the sling, about 8 inches from the top.

Fold both sides of the top section of the sling over the top of the bar and criss-cross them. Pull the ends underneath the bar so they are in the same basic position as when you started. Pull tightly but not as tightly as possible.

Fold the ends over the top of the bar a second time and criss-cross them again as in Step 1. Bring the ends to the back and secure them by tying a tight knot. The double criss-cross is not necessary, but it will add bulk and detail to the photograph.
