How to Maintain a Professional Portfolio ~ Enhance Photography Skill

A portfolio is a collection of a photographer's best images that represents who she is as an artist and introduces her to potential clients. Maintaining a professional portfolio that demonstrates your skill and style is key to a successful career as a photographer. Traditionally, the word "portfolio" meant a physical collection of images but, as technology has grown, digital portfolios have become the norm. You may opt to have both. No matter what you choose, the same basic concepts apply.

Build your portfolio by using friends and family. If you are a new photographer, begin building your portfolio by offering your services for free or a nominal fee.

Organize as you go. When editing your images, set aside any that you deem portfolio-worthy. By having favorite images available in one folder, you won't have to search through all your images later.

Select images that both showcase your talent and represent your unique point of view. Think about what you have to offer to potential clients and make sure that is represented in your portfolio.

Remember that your portfolio extends beyond the images you have personally selected. Anything that you have sent out into the public is a representation of you and your work.
