Tips for Taking Pictures at a Dance Recital

Dance photography can capture the elegance of the artform and the proud moments of a young dancer. However, parents who photograph their child's dance recital may be disappointed when the photos turn out blurry or dark. These are common problems in dance photography, as the subjects move so quickly it can be difficult for cameras to react as needed. Fortunately, there are several camera features and techniques that can help to avoid these issues and produce stunning images.

Fast Shutter Speed

Use a shutter speed that is higher than 1/100. Any shutter speed lower than 1/100 will likely create blurry photos, as the dancers will move to a new position before the shutter closes. To create a deliberately arty photo, lower your shutter speed and center the camera on a dancer who is not moving. The resulting photograph will show the dancer still in the center with blurred lights and movement behind her, creating a dreamy and artistic feel.

Continuous Shooting

Use a camera that has continuous shooting capabilities. This is a feature on many modern cameras that allows you to snap several photographs rapidly simply by holding your finger down on the shutter release button. This is a particularly useful feature for dance photography as it can be difficult to predict the dancers' next moves. To avoid missing a brilliant leap or twirl, use continuous shooting and simply delete any unwanted photos at a later time.

ISO

The ISO function determines how sensitively the camera will respond to light. Since many dance performances and recitals take place in low lighting, using an 800 ISO or higher will help you freeze and capture light on the subjects you're photographing. This function is also referred to as ASA and, in older film cameras deals with film speed rather than a mere camera setting. However, if the lights are too bright for you, then switch to black and white or sepia, both of which dim the effect of severe lighting.

Fast Focusing Lens

Use a camera with a fast focusing lens such as an AF-S, USM, or HSM lens. A lens that takes too long to focus can cause you to miss a perfect photo opportunity. The further you sit from the action, the longer your camera will need to focus on particular objects. If your camera does not have a fast-focusing lens, take photos at a moment of relative stillness, or when all the dancers are in a small section of the stage. This will compensate for a slow focus.
