Photography of small to medium sized items where lighting must be diffused requires the use of a lightbox. A lightbox is a boxed structure that contains a slightly translucent material on the top, and on three of the other sides, allowing light to be softened as it enters the box. The softened light falls onto the object being photographed, producing a natural and professional appearance. Lightboxes can be created using any structure such as a homemade wire frame or an unneeded box.,
Instructions
- 1
Turn the box over and set the bottom onto a flat surface. Carefully cut out the sides, leaving no less than 2 inches of cardboard all around each side of the box. Use a razor knife to make the cuts. The result should be a large square hole on all four sides with 2 inches of cardboard around them, creating the appearance of a cardboard "frame."
2Cut away any flaps from the top of the box, so that the top is permanently open.
3Cut sections of wax paper large enough to cover the square openings on three sides of the lightbox, leaving one side open from which to take your photographs.. Secure the wax paper by pressing horseshoe nails through the wax paper and the cardboard edges, bending both ends downward with needle-nosed pliers so they don't pull through. One horseshoe nail per every 4 inches should be adequate in securing the waxpaper. Use one pair of pliers to hold one end while bending the other so the nail doesn't get pulled downward cutting through the cardboard.
4Lay a piece of white poster board into the box, inserting through the top so one end is at the back of the box, and the other end is at the open side of the box. Lift the edge of the poster board near the back and crease it so it "hangs" on the top back edge. Secure that creased poster board edge to the top rear edge of the box using horseshoe nails. Allow the poster board to gently hang, curving in the middle of the "floor" of the box. The front edge (near the open side) should be touching the box.
5Stretch wax paper across the open top of the box and secure with horseshoe nails. Pull the wax paper as tight as possible across the top, as the top sheet will add greater stability to the box.
6Place an object to be photographed onto the center of the white poster board. Aim studio lights into the top and the sides of the lightbox. Adjust lights for desired effect. Keep the lights at least six inches away from the wax paper so heat from the lights don't melt or burn the wax paper.
