How to Make a Slide Show From Old Photos for a Carousel Projector

Converting old photographs to slides for a traditional carousel projector is an excellent way to preserve valuable images and present them to friends, family and colleagues. Several devices are necessary to achieve this task and working with an art department or painter may assist you in finding a copy stand to document the images. Once your equipment is set, the process of giving your old photos a new life is fairly simple.

Instructions

    1

Mount your 35mm camera on a copy stand and be sure the camera is loaded with slide film, also called E-6 film. A copy stand is used primarily by artists to document paintings and photographic prints on slide film for archives, portfolios and contest entries. The camera is mounted several feet above the image platform and two arms to the side of the platform house lighting elements that illuminate the print or painting.

    2

Place your photograph below the mounted camera and be sure the corners are held in place by something stationary, such as a piece of masking tape. If the image is not held flat, the photograph may be distorted when documented by the camera.

    3

Adjust the lights to the side of the copy stand to reduce glare on the photographs. Moving the lights at different angles will reduce and eliminate the glare that may appear, depending on the surface of the photographic paper. Matte paper will have less glare than a glossy image.

    4

Focus the camera on the image to obtain a sharp photograph. Placing the copy stand on the floor might be a good idea so you can access the camera's viewfinder or use a ladder to get above the stand and focus the lens.

    5

Begin photographing each image. Bracket each shot by adjusting the camera's settings for a balanced exposure. This step will vary widely based on your camera type, but a manual SLR (single lens reflex) is the best camera to use in documenting your photographs with this method. Shoot one image above the balanced setting and one image below the balanced setting (also referred to as overexposed and underexposed). Slide film is very sensitive and will not render a good image if your settings are not exact. Understanding your camera's aperture, shutter speed and exposure meter is recommended. See the References for an excellent online tutorial to help understand the workings of a 35mm camera.

    6

Process your film at a professional lab that works with E-6 film. Research your lab prior to developing your film, as this procedure is no longer offered at many labs due to the popularity of digital photography and its replacement of slide film.

    7

Place the slides inside the slide machine's carousel and insert the carousel onto the top of the projector, according to the device's instructions. Be sure you have a large, white surface to project your slides on when conducting your slide show.
