Photography is an art that allows people to capture the essence of a person or object with a camera. However, photographing a person in a creative manner may not always please the viewer. When photographing a person, use common poses that make the portrait pleasing to others' eyes. Although photography is a creative process, keeping the portrait simple may tell more of a story than a portrait that is too distracting.
Single Portrait
A head shot is a common pose for a single person's portrait. The photographer frames the person from just below the neck to the top of the head. Allowing only the head and shoulders to be visible in the photograph, the head shot captures the person's facial features. The person's head often tilts to one side, allowing the photographer to capture the person's face at an angle as she looks into the camera. Other techniques include instructing the person to focus on a prop or item to create a sense of wonder or innocence in the photo.
Couple Portrait
Capture amicable couples to emit a sense of warmth in a photo. Depending on the relationship of the couple photographed, photographers select certain poses to display the connection between both people. It is common for friends to be photographed side by side to show a sense of equality. Photographers pose siblings together with the older sibling standing or sitting behind a younger sibling, to expose child's face and show the relationship between both children. Married couples often pose with the female wrapping her arms around the male, or the female hugging the male while resting her head on the male's chest.

Family portraits are photographed in a manner that displays the relationship between parents and children. Family portraits of five or more members are taken with the parents as the focal point. Photographers place parents in the center, while children stand behind or next to each parent to form an arc. Photographers also set children in front of parents, allowing parents to hug children from behind.
