How Does Framing Affect a Picture and What Is Framing in Photography?

Framing in photography is crucial to the final composition of a shot. It can either make or break the photo in terms of aesthetics and value. Simply changing the framing of the same subject and background can also change the entire meaning or implication the photo conveys. Through proper framing, a photo can look intriguing, exciting, magical, imposing, scary or mysterious.

Definition

Framing refers to how you document your subject into a still image that fits a rectangular space. It affects how you mount, compose and choose the elements that will appear on the photo and on which parts of the photo the said elements should appear. Framing has a significant effect on a photo's final composition, both subjectively and objectively. It can denote specific emotions or make a certain element become the focus of attention. An excellent framing allows the eyes to appreciate the various details on the photo, and at the same time, appreciate the photo as a whole.

Rule of Thirds

While framing is not calculated like a mathematical equation, it follows a basic guide called the "Rule of Thirds." A common practice in photography, it works by dividing the screen using two sets of equally-distanced vertical and horizontal lines, which split the image into nine equally sized parts. The intersections of the four lines serve as the main points of interest where the main subject of the photo is ideally placed. Generally, this makes the photo universally pleasing to the viewer. However, given photography's subjective nature as an art form, breaking this rule can still result in artistic photos, depending on how the photographer brings value to the various elements on frame.

Focus

A photo's framing leads the eyes toward the photographer's main focal point. It draws the viewer to a specific point on the photo and it can also provide a barrier between the foreground and the background of the shot. Filling the frame with a closer shot of the main subject generally makes the photo more intimate. This is because the viewer can see more details about the main subject throughout the frame. Making the main subject far from the frame can impact how the viewer sees the photo. The presence of other elements seen within the frame can provide variations in meaning..

Aesthetic Value and Context

The appeal of a photo relies on the visual attributes of the elements appearing on frame. Lines, curves and shapes and how colors, lights, shadows and texture are used on frame are essential to bringing aesthetic value to the photo. These elements also bring a sense of depth, dimension and meaning to the photo. For instance, a saturated photo of a couple pleasantly looking at each other on frame can signify romance and excitement, while a high contrast photo of a girl on the background and the silhouette of a man on a mysterious background can indicate fear or danger.
