How to Care for a Tintype Photo

A tintype photograph, also called a ferrotype and a melainotype, is a type of photograph that was developed in the 1850s. The image is an underexposed negative image that was produced by exposing light on a collodion emulsion on a piece of iron. A collodion emulsion is a mixture of cellulose nitrate, ether and alcohol. The image on a tintype is fragile and must be treated with care to avoid permanent damage. Tintypes were usually presented in a leather case with a thin piece of glass over the photograph.

Instructions

    1

Wash your hands before touching a tintype photograph. Wear clean, lint-free cotton gloves when handling tintype photographs to protect the photograph from fingerprints and skin oils that can damage the surface of the photograph. Hold the photograph by the edges.

    2

Clean the surface of a tintype photograph with a clean, soft brush if the image is not flaking or cracked. Use a new round powder makeup application brush. Wrap loose tintypes (those not in protective cases with a glass cover) in acid-free paper.

    3

Place tintypes in the original presentation case with glass covers in a polyester bag. Store the tintype upright in an acid-free photograph storage box away from direct sunlight in a closet at about 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

    4

Keep the humidity level below 40 percent to protect the surface of the photograph from deteriorating. Use a dehumidifier if necessary. Inspect the photographs every couple of months for damage or the presence of mold or mildew.
