Dots per inch, or DPI, refers to the way an image is printed on a piece of paper. Dots per inch is different from the pixels per inch, or PPI, that an image has on a digital camera or on screen. When printing a digital photo, you may want to change the dots per inch to meet the requirements of a home or professional printer. You can change the dots per inch of a digital image using photo editing software. You can use a professional photo editing program, such as Adobe Photoshop, or you may be able to use the image editing software that came with your digital camera or printer. You can also download free photo editing software using the resource link below.

Instructions

    1

Open the photo editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro or Irfanview.

    2

Go the File menu and choose Open. Choose the digital photo you want to open and click OK.

    3

Go to the Image menu, then choose Image Size, Resize or Resample. Or use the photo editing softwares help system to find a similar command. A dialog box with resizing and dots per inch information will appear.

    4

Make sure that any option to Resample Image is unchecked in the dialog box. If it is checked, click it to uncheck it. Make sure that any Maintain original size option is checked.

    5

Type the dots per inch you want in the DPI or Resolution box. Click OK. The photo will now have a new DPI setting without changing the size of the image.

    6

Go the File menu and choose Save As. Give the photo with the changed dots per inch a new name (you may want to include the new DPI number in the file name) and click OK to save it.
