Experimental photography is all about breaking the rules. Lens flares can create startling sunlight effects on your photos. You can achieve a sunlight effect, or lens flare, in two ways. You can create them as you are taking the picture, or add the effect using computer software. If the graphics software does not have a lens-flare effects option, you need to use a video-editing software that does. You can place the sunlight flare anywhere on the image. You can even choose different types of flares typical of particular lenses.

Create sunlight effects with your camera on a sunny cloudless day in a scenic location. Be careful not to point the camera directly at the sun. This will not achieve the effect you are after and will quite possibly damage your eyes. Secure the camera on a tripod to get better control of the camera.
2Loosen the screw on the tripod to let you freely move the camera around with the tripod handle. Avoid looking directly into the viewfinder during midday sun until you have made sure it is not pointing at the sun. Lock in the camera when in position to get steady shots.
3Position an object or person between the camera and the sun and watch for light streaks appearing around the backlit silhouette. Shifting the camera slightly will alter these lens flares, creating spherical shapes and sometimes even rainbow colors. Take a few pictures to capture the sunlight effects.
4Position the camera away from the sun, but near enough to create sunlight effects that stream into the picture from outside the frame. Lock the camera into place on the tripod once you have a desired effect appearing and take some pictures. Reposition to change the effect and take more. Waiting until evening can also enhance these shots with vibrant colors, as long as the sun is bright enough to create lens flares.
5Shoot directly into the sun during early morning or in the evening without overexposing the image or damaging your eyes. Experiment by taking lots of images at different times of the day.
6Create lens flares on a computer by uploading any image into the graphics or video-editing software. Place the image into the timeline on the video software. Select "Video Effects" from the "View" menu. Select "Lens Flare" and look at the different options. Choose differentlens types to mimic effects not possible with the lens on your camera.
7Apply effects on the image to see how they look. Drag and drop the effects directly on the image. Change the parameters of each option to move the location of the sunlight effect, or to change its characteristics, such as size or level of intensity.
8Save the image under a new name in case you wish to keep the original image intact.
