Matte boards give each framed picture a unique look as well as keep the picture from coming into contact with the glass. Many hobby stores sell precut matte boards, however, matte boards are also sold in sheets in which you then cut openings. Professional matte cutters use a table-top matte cutter. While this tool offers an exact and professional-looking cut, it is not necessary. A cheaper and more realistic alternative for the average do-it-yourselfer is to use a hobby knife and a yardstick.
Instructions
- 1
Turn the matte board upside down on a table. Use a yardstick to transfer the frame's dimensions to the matte board. For example, if you are placing a picture in an 8-inch by 10- frame, transfer 8 inches and 10 inches to the matte board.
2Lay the yardstick on the matte board, intersecting two marks. Place the edge of a hobby knife against the yardstick and use it as a guide to make the first cut. Turn the matte board and lay the yardstick along two more marks, then make a cut. Continue until you have the matte board cut out.
3Subtract the picture's length and width from the matte board's length and width. For example, if the picture you plan to mount on the 8-inch by 10-inch matte is 5 inches by 7 inches, subtract 5 from 8 and 7 from 10 to get 3 inches by 3 inches.
4Divide the answer you got in Step 3 in half and add 1/8 inch. For example, 3 divided by 2 equals 1 1/2, plus 1/8 inch equals 1 5/8 inches. With the matte board turned upside-down, measure 1 5/8 inches (or whatever answer you received in your calculations) in from each edge. Place two measurement marks along each edge so you can easily line up the yardstick and make a straight line.
5Use the yardstick to draw straight lines along each of the matte's edges to form a rectangle. Place the yardstick on one of the lines and use the hobby knife to cut along the line. Do not go past the rectangle's corners. Repeat on the remaining three lines and remove the rectangle.
