We've all had the experience of looking at old family photos and actually seeing what Great Grandma Rose looked like and the house she lived in 60 years ago. Especially nowadays, with everyone having a digital camera or at least a cell phone that takes pictures-there are all kinds of pictures around. The only problem is, since we don't have to print pictures to see them-how can we ensure they will be saved for future generation to enjoy? Here I'll explain how you can save your digital pictures for posterity.

Consider that digital pictures are a collection of bits that can be regenerated perfectly at any time, unlike a printed photograph that will slowly degenerate as the years go by, so the best way to store your digital pictures is as digital data.
2Storing digital photos on your computer hard drive is obviously one option; however, digital pictures take up a lot of space on a drive, and it's beyond imagining your computer will still be working 50 years from now.
3Using an external hard drive is a good option for storing pictures. They are relatively inexpensive (usually less than $100) and can store anywhere from 50 GB of information all the way up to 1 Tb, so you can literally store thousands of images. Most external hard drives attach to your computer through a USB cable, and you simply download your pictures from your computer's hard drive to the external hard drive.
4Alternatively, you could use a jump/thumb drive for storing your pictures. These small peripherals (about the size of a stick of gum) are in reality little external hard drives that can store up to 20 GB of information. You attach the drive directly to your computer by plugging it into a USB port, and once again download your images from the computer hard drive to the thumb drive. Two added advantages of these drives are: you don't need to plug them into a power source and they are so small (and inexpensive) that you can store several years' worth of pictures on a few drives that you keep in a small plastic box.
5CDs and DVDs can also provide an inexpensive convenient way to store your photos. Recordable CDs and DVDs are readily available, as well as inexpensive, and burning a copy of your pictures is quite easy with today's software. CDs have much less storage capacity than DVDs (CD=700 MB/DVD=4 GB). This means you can "only" store about 350 photos on a CD versus 2,100 on a DVD, so if you want to store lots and lots of pictures, a DVD should be your choice.
