How to Use Nikon SB 800 Flash

Introduced in 2003, the SB-800 was Nikon's top-of-the-line flash until it was discontinued in 2008 and replaced by the SB-900. The flash has a high output range of two to 66 feet and is easy to use in TTL (through-the-lens) mode to get good shots. The head of the flash can swivel 180 degrees and can also be tilted up at an angle to use as a bounce flash for softer, more natural light. The SB-800 is compatible with all Nikon D-SLRs.

Instructions

    1

Remove the battery latch door and insert four of the AA batteries into the slots, following the diagram to line up the polarity. Insert the fifth AA battery in the quick recycling pack and slide it into place over the other four. The quick recycling pack enables the SB-800 to recycle faster between flashes.

    2

Mount the SB-800 on your camera by turning the lock lever to the left and sliding the flash into the hot shoe, then turning the lock lever to the right to lock it in place.

    3

Turn on your camera and press the "On" button on the back, right side of the flash.

    4

Press the "Mode" button on the back of the flash once and be sure that "TTL BL" is displayed on the LCD panel on the back of the flash.

    5

Turn your camera mode dial to "A."

    6

Adjust the position of the SB-800 head to best illuminate your subject. Shooting with the head at 90 degrees provides the most light. Tilting the flash to 45 degrees and bouncing the light off the ceiling softens it and makes it look more natural.

    7

Check that the ready light on the back of the flash is lit. Compose your picture, then press the shutter button to take the shot.

    8

Check the ready light on the back of the flash. If it is blinking, the shot may be underexposed. Recompose the shot by moving closer to your subject or change the camera's mode dial to "P" and select a higher ISO, then take the shot again.
