Ever had your model ask the question "How should I pose?" on a photo shoot, then tried to be creative on the spot? This can happen to many photographers who are just beginning to shoot portraits and have not developed a particular style. Here are some ideas for posing your model and inspiration to shape your portrait style.
Lying on Grass
To photograph people lying in the grass, have them put their arms behind their heads while looking up at the camera. Use a step ladder to gain height and perspective. Place your models off center. Another variation is to have them lie on their sides, looking into the camera, with one arm pressed against the ground. Shoot in a tight crop from waist to head using a landscape orientation.
Reaching
Have your models hold onto a low tree branch or bars with both arms and look at the camera. You may crop at the waist or take a full-body shot. For a variation, have your models turn their heads and capture a profile shot.
Glamourous Standing Pose
Instruct the subject to turn her body from the camera, one hand on her hip and the other to her face. Another option is to have her rest her fingers on her cheek while tilting her head back slightly, allowing her hair to fall naturally. This will give her a gentle, elegant look. You may want to make a variation of this pose by asking her to put her shoulder towards the lens and then to look over her shoulder.
Sitting on a Bench
Have your subject sit on a bench and bring his legs up onto it, crossing them as he places his elbow against the back of the bench. Instruct him to lean his head against his forearm. Another variation involves having him bring one knee up to his chest and wrapping his arms around his leg, making eye contact with the camera.
Conservative Look
Shoot to the waist of your subject. Have her wrap one arm around her waist, and then prop the elbow of the other arm in the palm of her hand. Have her bring the other hand up to her face, then instruct her to caress her cheek with her fingers while looking into the camera. This provides a high-fashion, conservative style and confident look.
Standing by a Wall
Have your subject lean her back against a tree or wall with arms folded in front of her. Instruct her to look towards the camera. Have her lift one leg slightly, knee bent and foot kicked back slightly against the other leg for a high-fashion look. Another variation involves having her lean one shoulder against the tree with the other hand resting against the bark.
Male Pose
Have your model sit on a chair or stool, leaning forward with his elbows on his knee. Instruct him to look directly into the camera. Another variation is to ask him to lean both arms on his knees and look intently into the camera -- or to lean his arms against a stone ledge or similar object.
Male Trendy Pose
Have a male subject lean against a wall with one leg propped up against the wall and his arms folded in front of him. A variation is to have the model place his hands in his pockets. This gives a look that is preppy and trendy.
