How to Make a JPEG Smaller

You might want to decrease the size of a JPEG image for many reasons. For example, you may want to place the picture on a website that limits the size of posted pictures or graphics. Making a JPEG image or picture smaller also makes the file smaller, allowing you to send it through email or store it on an external device, such as a memory stick.

Instructions

Open the image in Microsoft Photo Editor by either right-clicking the image file and selecting "Open With" and choosing Microsoft Photo Editor or open Microsoft Photo Editor, select "Open" from the "File" menu and find the image file you want to alter.

Select "Resize" from the "Image" menu, and reduce either the width or height, either by size or percentage, by changing the number in the corresponding space. Change the size in only one place, because the others will change automatically to avoid any distortion of the image. Click "OK" when you're finished.

Select "Properties" from the "File" menu to check the size of the image.

Select "Save As" from the "File" menu to save the altered image and keep the original image intact. Name your new image file and store it where you can find it later.
