The calotype method of photography dates back to 1840 in the early days of photography. Sheets of paper were sensitized with silver iodide and exposed to light, creating negative images that were then printed in contact with another sheet of paper to produce a final, positive image. The calotype method can be approximated today using contemporary materials and chemistry, and the nature of paper contact prints will give a soft effect that is unique to this process.

Prepare the paper sheets. The most common size for large-format cameras is 4 by 5 inches, though 5-by-7-inch and 8-by-10-inch cameras can be found. In a dark room under a safelight suitable for use with photographic papers, use the paper cutter to trim your paper to size. Use photographic paper that has no manufacturer logo printed on the back. This logo will print through when using the paper negative to make a final print.
2Load film holders with cut sheets, taking care to assure the emulsion side of the paper is up. Accurate cutting to size is necessary to prevent the paper from jamming or buckling. Install the dark slides into the film holders. Mark the film holders to indicate paper negatives are loaded.
3Set your light meter for the speed of the paper you are using. Photographic paper is rated in ASA/ISO terms, so you can accurately calculate exposure for your photo. Check the data sheet for your specific paper type. For example, Ilford Multigrade IV RC has an ISO speed of 500.
4Compose your photo, load and expose a sheet as you would regular film. Keep in mind that photographic papers are designed to be used under safelights and can be considered orthochromatic, that is, less sensitive to red light, more sensitive to blue light. Red objects will not register on the negative and will thus appear darker than normal on a final print. Blue objects will appear lighter.
