The Polaroid brand is so synonymous with instant film that many people use the name to refer to any photo taken with instant film regardless of the brand. The decline of film use led to the end of production of Polaroids instant film line, but fans of the classic effects of Polaroid film were so adamant about keeping it alive that a group called The Impossible Project managed to bring it back. When most people talk about Polaroid effects today, they are referring not only to the literal effects on instant film but also applying these effects to digital photos.

Low Image Quality

While Polaroid does not technically equate to poor image quality -- professional photographers used to use Polaroids to test lighting before shooting actual rolls of film -- most consumer-grade Polaroid photos have a blurry or slightly distorted image. This comes from a combination of the actual instant film and the quality of the lens in the Polaroid camera you use. The low image quality synonymous with Polaroids can create a nostalgic, retro, romantic or dreamy feel.

Contrast and Saturation

Polaroid effects also have to do with extremes, particularly when it comes to contrast and saturation. Polaroid photos have a tendency to have very high or very low contrast and very high or very low saturation, with results rarely in between. Lighting conditions, the type of film and the camera used all play a role in saturation and contrast. If you want to create Polaroid film effects on digital photos, playing with contrast and saturation is essential.

Vignetting

Vignetting refers to a black halo towards the edges of a photograph, frequently with black corners. Vignetting is a key visual effect present in most Polaroid images, particularly if you use a flash. Most computer and mobile apps that create Polaroid effects on digital photos include options for adjusting the degree of vignetting.

Borders

Although borders are part of the composition of Polaroid film, when it comes to Polaroid effects the first thing most people think of is the classic white border with a larger band on the bottom for text. You can find desktop applications and mobile applications that automatically add Polaroid-style borders to your digital photos, or add them yourself with image-editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
