Tips on Posing Couples

Photographing couples gives you a chance to take a dynamic and emotional snapshot of their lives. The couple will look back on the pictures and remember their story, so approach the photo session as a way to represent their history. Be creative and romantic. Make sure to plan ahead and bring any props you may need.

The Mood

Set the right mood for your pictures. Ask the couple how they met, some of their favorite memories and what they love most about each other. This will contribute to a romantic atmosphere. Help them feel comfortable and natural. Often, memories will elicit a natural pose that looks great in print. Use soft lighting.

Spacing and Arrangement

Decide where to focus the couple's gaze.

Pose one person, then pose the second person in relation to the first. Place them very close together to symbolize their intimacy. Don't be afraid to step into the scene and show them what you are looking for. Stagger the couple's faces; one set of eyes should be parallel to the other's lips.

Decide where the couple should focus their gaze. Should they look into each other's eyes? They could both be looking into the distance, wrapped in an embrace. Even though the couple is posed, it should look as natural as possible. If something looks awkward or uncomfortable, move them around.

Body Language

Work on the couple's body language.

Your portraits should tell a story. Be aware of the body language between the couple. Their mood will be captured on camera by the way they hold themselves. Avoid letting a subject cross his arms -- this portrays hostility and a lack of comfort. Be aware of hand positioning. The lines of their body should flow, so avoid having clinched fists, even to rest their heads.

Scenery

Take advantage of the natural setting around you. Zoom out from the couple to include your location. The landscape will tell part of their story. If there is a pool or lake nearby, take a picture of the couple jumping in as they hold hands. If you are in a park, let one person sit on a tree limb as the other stands below. Outdoor scenery brings photos to life in a way studio photography cannot duplicate.
